Nigel Hinch of ABILITY has been recognised for his voluntary services by being awarded The Rose of Northamptonshire. He has volunteered his time over the last 5 years building a reliable, friendly, and affordable bus service that is open to all in West Northamptonshire and North Oxfordshire.
Following continued cuts to bus services, and seeing many parishes especially rural areas lose their only access to public transport, Nigel alongside his wife Lynn set out to try and fill this void. From humble beginnings thanks to Nigel’s drive and focused energy he has steered the company on a steep expansion path from 1 bus to 10, with 21 staff that enables them to help over 1200 members in over 62 parishes. Formed in 2018, ABILITY support community groups, people struggling to reach employment, essential services and younger generations reach further education and recreation. Nigel has been instrumental in ensuring the organisation was a success and putting the community needs at the heart of everything he does. Nigel is truly motivational to his team and peers within the community transport sector. He works all hours and is always there to ask for help, he is well regarded as the go to problem solving man within the industry. The service which he created is a real-life saver!
Members regard the service as a lifeline and the service has been described as a social club on wheels. One user commented, “I cannot thank ABILITY enough for the wonderful service we receive. The drivers are so considerate and kind and helpful. We are so fortunate to have them. Thank you.”
“We are thrilled that Nigel has won this award”, said Lynn, co-Director and Founder of ABILITY. She said that it is great to see him receive recognition for all his hard work.
Nigel goes out of his way to please people and has a real ‘can do’ attitude to anything he turns his hand too. He is a true inspiration, networking with stakeholders, taking time to understand the needs of the community and ensuring the service not only meets their needs but is so much more than just a bus service.
